Feature Recognition for Inventor (http://labs.autodesk.com/utilities/feature_recognition/)
Use the Feature Recognition application to convert neutral 3D CAD models, such as STEP, SAT, or IGES solids, into full-featured Autodesk Inventor models. Feature mapping can be executed automatically or interactively as needed to maintain design intent.

Feature Recognition Tool for Pro/ENGINEER (http://www.ptc.com/products/proe/frt/index.htm)

Vendor description: FRT is a plug-in application for Pro/E Wildfire 4.0, design engineers have a comprehensive set of tools to selectively replace geometries representing features in imported solid boundary representation models (IGES, STEP, etc) with true parametric features.

FRT enables design engineers to build design intelligence into imported models for easy, predictable changes. For example, a user can replace hole geometry with a hole feature and use it down-stream for assembly, detailing, and manufacturing. The non-modifiable static geometry is replaced with a fully editable hole feature. FRT can even recognize and place patterns of features.

Capabilities:

  • Identify and replace static geometry with feature rich content.
    • Simple or sketched holes on flat or curved surfaces
    • Protrusions or pockets on flat or curved surfaces
    • Extruded slots
    • Constant radius rounds
    • Chamfers
    • Table pattern for holes
  • Easy – to – use action/object approach
    • Select the desired feature search tool
    • Then select the surface or edge to start the search from
    • Have constant visual feedback during feature creation

Benefits:

  • Facilitate down-stream re-use of imported models
  • Rebuild flexibility into imported designs from a single, familiar modeling environment
  • Increased efficiency over remastering 3D imported designs by hand

freeCAD (http://www.ar-cad.com/products/freecad.html)
Vendor description: freeCAD is a basic 3D CAD with advanced motion simulation capabilities. It is suitable for anyone interested in learning 3D CAD and motion simulation for free before using more sophisticated packages. Educators, students and new engineers will find it ideal for the teaching and learning of geometry, kinematics, dynamics, vibrations, mechanisms, linkages, cams, machine design and physics. The program runs on Windows, Linux PC, Macintosh PPC and other Unix's. Assembly data are unchanged across platforms.freeCAD allows users to create and manipulate assemblies of parts. The parts are simple 3D solids, which can be connected by joints, constraints, contacts, motors, actuators, springs, dampers, forces, torques or gravity. The parts and connections define the structure, mechanism or machine of interest. Both open and closed 3D loops are permitted. freeCAD performs full multibody dynamics Analysis on the assembly to predict the motion according to Newton's Laws. Animation using the simulated data produces realistic dynamic behavior of the system.

GCRI for Pro/E (http://www.ptc.com/products/granite/gcri/free-download.htm)

GCRI allows the Pro/E Wildfire 2.0 user to open Pro/E Wildfire 4.0 models.

Capabilities

  • Read models generated in later releases into earlier releases (back to Pro/E Wildfire 2.0)
  • Display and maintain the full feature tree in the earlier release
  • Use later release models in downstream applications of earlier releases (analysis, mold design, routed systems, etc)
  • Add features to later release models to support downstream application use
  • Appending changes back to later release models to recover full model definition with no loss of design data
Benefits
  • Clean translation into earlier release eliminates need to repair neutral format translations
  • More modeling information is now available to earlier release users for clearer understanding of modeling intent
  • Protects existing geometry and design intent from changes in the earlier release
  • Improves supply chain interoperability by reducing the cases where all participants must use the same release of Pro/E

iCopy for Inventor (http://labs.autodesk.com/utilities/inventor_icopy/)
Vendor description: iCopy for Inventor is an Autodesk Inventor add-in that enables you to make multiple copies of an assembly that automatically resize to fit your design. By capturing a few key constraints, such as connection points and paths, iCopy creates and inserts multiple instances of the assembly, automatically adjusting the size and shape of each occurrence based on your functional requirements.

Benefits:

  • Save time by easily customizing commonly-used assemblies
  • Avoid errors when working with complex designs involving multiple paths
  • Innovate by exploring multiple design iterations quickly
